P R O J E C T S (future aspirations.)
My most current goals are to further my "funky-ECM jazz"
band "New Regime"; which originated sometime 2002....
It's has had several versions of itself since it started, but seems
to be moving in the flow of where I see "Modern" jazz
music moving towards. Many of the groups these days such as MMW(martin, medski, wood),
and Scofield for example have been paving the way for other forms
of jazz. Jazz fusing with funk elements, and now even hip pop/ electronica
feels, to name a few. We are also seeing many new groups that are
becoming 2nd generation spinoffs of these groups (ie. soulive, String
cheese incident). I hear lots of groove/funk bands moving in this
direction and its generally great music, fun to listen, dance to,
while having public appeal. I think this is a great thing; but I
also believe that the European Jazz movement of the last 30 years
or so has been another great jazz-derived style of music. It has
been cultivated by ECM records and other innovative groups that
write in that eighth note feel(non-swing style). It includes musical
elements of a more transient/ethereal soundscape, and combines elements
of jazz, latin, world, and folk/pop. Some groups are E.S.T, Moutin
Bros, and Kenny Wheeler to name a few of the many who are pushing
ahead in the European jazz world! This style is very fascinating
and underrated. I feel that these two directions along side original
music of mine, makes for a very unique/original sound. It provides
the listeners with a very well rounded sample of music; music that
really reaches all types of individuals young and old, jazz lovers,
college age kids into funky stuff, or just simply fresh music not
really being heard else where in Albany,NY. "New Regime"
for me represents a new page in my musical explorations, a new path
that is in current flow with progressive-improvisational music!
The New Regime is primarily myself and Eric Walentowicz(saxes),
and at this point a rotating cast of bass and drum players.
